The Celtic Christianity Group

The Celtic Christianity Group exists to encourage one another in Celtic Christianity and focus one’s spirituality on the God who loves his Creation in all its forms, and gave us Jesus as our redeemer and pattern.

St. John’s Celtic group was formed in October 1997 and although small in number, is by no means elitist but open to any who may share an enthusiasm for a spirituality akin to early Celtic Christians.

The group have shared two weekends away together and, to date, have led three church services with a Celtic theme. The hope is that this century may see an increasing awareness of the interweaving of the spiritual and the physical throughout creation as did the Celts. Living in harmony with creation would greatly challenge the consumer driven culture of today.

The phrase, (attributed to Celtic thinking), ‘There is nowhere where God is not’, puts our Lord at the centre of an evolving creation with but a thin line separating ‘things heavenly and things of the earth’.

The group feels the Church’s mission would have greater influence if it regarded the experience of our Celtic forebears when meeting the challenges within today’s secular society.

Underlying all this there is in Celtic spirituality a humility which opens up a wide field of love and compassion for others.

['Everlasting Pattern' - Celtic art
by Mervyn Bracey]

The ‘Everlasting Pattern’ of interweaving strands in Celtic art, we see as a symbol of the spiritual and physical, which we separate at our peril.

Human relationships and world ecology need to heed that if future generations are to enjoy a peaceful and healthy environment.
