ST JOHN'S ACTION FOR THE THIRD WORLD GROUP

A group of 12 people (from St.John's and neighbouring churches) meets several times a year to organise events and fundraisers which support Third World projects. Sometimes we respond to emergency appeals but we also support long term ongoing projects such as the work of the Cornish charity "Action Water". Dirty water is the biggest killer in the developing world so by supporting Action Water's work to provide water tankers, stand pipes, wells and sanitation systems, we are able to really make a difference to a great number of people in small third world communities.

Fundraising is a large part of our work but just as important is the work of raising awareness of Third World issues in our community. We have helped to run Fairtrade stalls in local supermarkets/farmers markets and have also sent letters and postcards to MPs lobbying them about Trade Justice. Some of us have supported e-mail campaigns organised by Christian Aid to lobby large multinational companies about unfair practices.

St John’s Action for the Third World Group – “Every Penny counts”

During most of 2006 members of St John’s have been saving 5p pieces in small “water jars” and emptying these in a “well” in church on the first Sunday of each month. Along with other donations this raised £!000 over the year for our adopted charity “Action Water”. This small, Cornish based Charity works specifically in Third World communities to help provide clean water and sanitation systems. Dirty water is the biggest killer of children in the developing world, so the work of Action Water in small communities has a very real impact on the quality of life for great numbers of people. The money raised in 2006 will enable Action Water to continue it’s work at Liberty School, Nairobi, Kenya. The school has already benefited from a rainwater harvesting project. It is now having to expand to take in large numbers of refugees from the Darfur region of war torn Sudan. The next project at the school will be to build toilet blocks to accommodate increasing numbers of children. Action Water will be there, using funds from St John’s to help.
