A Brief History of St. John's Church

Our Church, St. John's Fishponds, was consecrated in 1911 but, as one might expect, its life began many years before that, back in the 19th century.  In 1887, the Bishop of Bristol gave the Vicar of St. Mary's, Fishponds (The Rev. Arthur Day) permission to hold Divine Service in a schoolroom in Chester Park Road.  It is assumed Services were held here until 1894 when St. Mary's Vestry acquired a temporary, second-hand Church building and erected it in "that park of Fishponds known as The Causeway, Chester Park".

This temporary building was dedicated by the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol.  In January 1909, the Revd. W. H. Hand was appointed Curate in Charge.

With everyone eagerly looking forward to the consecration of the new, permanent Church on 25th May 1911, tragedy struck.  The Revd. W. H. Hand died on 13th March.  By a very strange coincidence, the Revd. M. C. Griffiths, first vicar of All Saints, died in the same hour.

More will come later!
